Didn't think of posting the article here since the entire thing is garbage and obnoxious.  WTH is ¡u»ÀµøÃì¡v? Maybe I'm being a little ignorant and out of loop life in HK, but do people really analyze an acquaintance in such detailed way?  Or the author had nothing better to do in life and tried to decide which group of people reigns supreme? I would think if someone actually calculates the potential value of friendship like this and puts down others in order to feel good about him/herself, then this person must be sweet like a pie probably works a soul-destroying job, lacks passion in life, and could probably use some counseling/a life coach.

Yeah, I guess if you take this as a joke.  I don't doubt that there are folks who make comparisons in each category, but these so called 'unspoken pecking orders' are super annoying. I don't give a rat's *** whether someone has a high-paying job, works at a prominent bank or BigLaw firm, or graduated from an Ivy League. As long as the person is decent and kind, I'd like to befriend him/her. Frankly, I wonder what is the profile of people who make comparisons like these? Do they want to be associated with the 'better' groups and hope that one day they'll be one of the members by networking? Or are they trying to keep up with the Joneses?

The "fake it till you make it" mentality. As you said it yourself, to associate oneself with a "better" group in order to be seen as one of its members. This contributes to the (false) belief that one is part of said "better" group. The fact that it is not true that one is a member of group leads to cognitive dissonance. This in turn forces one to "push the act" further, in order to maintain the false belief.

The joke is of course the group members are likely to implicitly know who's the phony, even if not made explicit.
