This was an adaptation of "Lian Suo" in The Liao Chai Collection
of Ghost Stories by Pu Songling (1630 or 1640-1715 AD).
Young man Yang Wei and his elder brother Yang Jing had been adopted by an uncle since their parents' death. Yang Jing had been in love with the uncle's daughter Su Yun, who was fond of Yang Wei instead. Yang Jing was envious of his brother and asked his uncle to accommodate him in an old house in the countryside. Yang Wei loved hunting in the woods and agreed to move. |

At night, Yang Wei heard a sweet voice of a young lady reciting poems.
It was Lian Suo, who died at the age of 17 and was buried nearby.
She was beautiful but lonely, and loved wandering around at night,
reciting her favourite poems or playing the strings. Yang Wei did
not know she was a ghost and invited her to have conversations in
his room. Later the two fell in love with each other and could
hardly separate.
One day Yang Wei was ill and Su Yun asked her father to bring him home. On the one hand Yang Jing knew Yang Wei was eager to return and let him go. On the other he ordered some servants to burn the haunted house, hoping to kill his brother as he returned. Su Yun reported to his father and tried to rescue Yang Wei but failed. Yang Wei was burnt to death and married Lian Suo in the afterlife.
