Impovershed girl Jin Xiaotao had no money to bury her mother
and offered herself for sale on the streets. Out of sympathy,
Beijing opera musicians Hua Mingchun and Chen Muliang admitted
Jin as their student and asked her to help with the housework.
However, Hua Mingchun's daughter Hua Xiufeng was so arrogant
that she looked down upon Jin. One day when Jin was listening
to Hua Xiufeng's rehearsal she spilt a bowl of soup by accident.
Hua Xiufeng then beat Jin up but was soon stopped by her father.
On a windy and snowy day Jin suddenly fell on the street. A medical student Fang Yangping came to her assistance and tried to comfort her. Jin was so moved by his kind words and was grateful of him. |

One day Hua Xiufeng ran away with her lover and missed a
performance. Having failed to find her, Hua Mingchun then
asked Jin to substitute her. Surprisingly Jin's first performance
had impressed the audience so much so that she soon emerged
as a rising star of Beijing opera in the name of Jin Bitao.
Three years later after Hua Mingchun's death, Jin met Fang again in a restaurant where she was invited to a banquet. Fang, who had become a practising doctor since graduation, escorted her home. She then hinted at her love and gratitude for him. They soon got married and led a warm and happy life. |

During her performance one day Jin suddenly sat on the floor
and her legs were paralysed. Despite months of treatment there
was no sign of recovery. In order to take better care of his
beloved wife in a quiet environment, Fang decided to move to
the countryside where he had to work in a small clinic.
Years had passed and Jin had shown little improvement. Jin was so depressed that she wanted to commit suicide but was stopped by her husband. Fang tried his best to encourage her and she finally gave up the idea of self-destruction. |

One day, Jin was invited to sing Beijing opera in a charity
show for disabled children. The audience was so impressed that
they responded with a thunder of applause. As the children
came onto the stage to greet her, Jin stood up miraculously to
help them. Jin and Fang were so overjoyed that they held
each other tightly in tears.
