This was an adaptation of "The Biography of Xin Ling Jun" in Shi Ji by Sima Qian (145 BC - ?).
Because of war and famine, Ru Ji fled from her country Zhao to Wei, where she met a prince called Xin Ling Jun. They fell in love with each other, but Ru was later sent into the palace to become a beloved concubine of King Wei. As Zhao became weaker and weaker in face of fierce invasions from Qin, Xin was worried that Wei would fall prey to Qin after the collapse of Zhao. He had repeatedly requested King Wei to offer Zhao military assistance but failed. One day, Ru's sworn sister Hou Kejian came to report that Zhao was on the blink of extinction. Ru then volunteered to steal King Wei's military token so Xin could mobilise his royal troops to the rescue of Zhao. As Zhao was relieved from devastation, Ru was on her way to the guillotine for betraying King Wei.
