Feng Shuying came from a Chinese family in Kuala Lumpur. For years she had been in love with Zhang Junkang, who was going to study in the United Kingdom. He promised to marry Feng when he returned.

After Zhang had departed, Feng's father suffered huge losses in business and was on the brink of bankruptcy. His creditor Lin Fuyuan said he would write off all his loans only if his daughter would marry him. Feng had no choice but to agree. A year later, Feng gave birth to a son, named Xiao Kang.

Zhang never stopped writing letters to his lover from the United Kingdom. However, not a single letter reached the hands of Feng. They went to Lin's. Lin was convinced that Feng was still in touch with Zhang and was envious.

Years had passed. Zhang graduated and returned to Kuala Lumpur to work in Lin's company as an engineer. One day in Lin's party for his campaign for chairmanship at the chamber of commerce, Zhang was shocked to know that Feng had married Lin. Seeing that Zhang was agitated, Lin insulted both Zhang and Feng with the love letters he had confiscated. Zhang left and stood in the heavy rain to wait for Feng.

Out of sympathy, Feng agreed to see Zhang again. He offered to leave for Europe with Feng, but Feng refused with thoughts for her son. Zhang was extremely sad and disappointed and was injured in a horsemanship tournament.

Feng had hoped to see Zhang after his injury, but Lin refused to let her go. Meanwhile, Xiao Kang was seriously ill but Lin did not allow Feng to take care of him either. Days later, Xiao Kang died. Lin was sorrow-stricken. At the funeral of Xiao Kang, Lin finally signed on the divorce agreement and handed it over to Feng.
