| Liu Yanchang, a young scholar, once went sightseeing in Mountain Hua in Shaanxi province. In a temple he saw a statue of the Goddess of Mountain Hua and was deeply impressed by her charm and beauty. As Liu was leaving he was robbed and seriously injured. The Goddess came to his rescue and they fell in love with each other, so much so that they were about to marry. The Goddess' second eldest brother, the Vanguard of the Heaven, tried to separate them but was defeated by the Goddess who had a 1000-year-old magic lamp. The Goddess then married Liu and a year later, she gave birth to a baby boy called Chenxiang. |

Three months later, the Vanguard ordered his Heavenly Dog to
steal the magic lamp from the Goddess before he led a troop to
arrest her. Without the magic lamp the Goddess lost most of her
magic powers and was soon defeated and held in custody. Liu
managed to escape with his son but was heart-broken and vowed
to rescue his beloved wife. As later persuaded by the Goddess'
maid, Lingzhi, he returned to his hometown and married another
woman Wang Guiying. They had another son called Qiuer.
Years later Chenxiang and Qiuer had grown up and became good brothers, without knowing that they were born to different mothers. One day, they saw that their schoolmate Qin Guanbao, the son of the prime minister, trying to force his attentions on a woman and hurried to stop him with other classmates. During the quarrel Qin was beaten to death by accident. Grief-stricken and outrageous, Prime Minister Qin ordered the arrest of Chenxiang and Qiuer. The Liu brothers rushed home to tell their parents and asked to be brought to the court. Liu was so annoyed that he could hardly decide. Later, his wife Wang decided to bring Qiuer to the court and asked Chenxiang to save his own mother in Mountain Hua. With the help of Lingzhi, Chenxiang became a student of the God of Thunder to learn magic powers. As Chenxiang finished his studies he wasted no time to challenge the Vanguard to a duel but was defeated. The God of Thunder then stole the magic lamp for him. With the magic lamp Chenxiang gained extra powers which enabled him to defeat the Vanguard. He then released his mother and followed her to the Heaven. Meanwhile, the court ruled that Qiuer was not responsible for the death of Qin and he was acquitted to reunite with his parents.
