Young man Wu Dehua had been unemployed for three years. He was so depressed that he had determined to commit suicide in a hotel room. He sent his mother a letter and spent the remaining cents on a bus trip.

It was the rush hour in the evening. A messenger was heading for the office with a large sum of money, but a pickpocket had stolen the money from him. When the messenger was about to get off, he noticed the money was gone and asked the driver to report to the police immediately. When the police came, the pickpocket put the money in Wu's pocket instead. Then the messenger got off in despair.

The pickpocket had tried to get back the money from Wu's pocket but failed. Moments later a pregnant woman laboured on the bus. When the bus arrived at a hospital, Wu volunteered to escort her. The pickpocket had no choice but followed.

A nurse Zhang Shufen mistook Wu as the woman's husband and asked him to register. Wu tried to explain but Zhang would not listen. A doctor also came to ask for Wu's consent to conduct a surgery for the pregnant woman. Wu was angry with the pregnant woman and complained to her. She apologised and spoke of the death of her husband three months ago. Out of sympathy, Wu finally agreed to sign the documents for her.

Wu was about to leave the next morning after the woman gave birth to a baby boy. Yet the hospital forced him to pay for the service. The pickpocket was so annoyed that he asked Wu to pay the bill with the sum of money in his pocket. Wu was confused about the money but he finally managed to return to the hotel.

There was a crowd in the hotel because the messenger was found committing suicide in a room. Wu's mother was also there, having received her son's letter. Until then did Wu give up his determination to die and return home with his mother.
