| Gambler Xu Guangyao was born to a rich family but the good days were gone since his father's death. His father did not leave any fortune for Xu but bills and loans. Xu was then forced to sell his house and live in a hostel room. The contemptuousness of his gambling friends prompted him to regain fortune by all means. Once in a social gathering Xu met a young lady Sun Zhiying, daughter
of the richest man in Macau. He took enormous efforts to win Sun's
love and trust for him and finally married her.
Sun's father referred Xu to work in a bank but he continued with gambling in secret. Soon Sun's father passed away and Xu was eager to succeed his fortune with his wife in Macau. To his surprise, his father-in-law bequeathed them nothing else but some antique clocks and watches. Most of his fortune had been donated to charity organisations and the poor in his clan. |

Outrageous and disappointed, Xu returned to Hong Kong with his wife.
Soon he learnt that Tang was about to marry a rich man from Southeast
Asia and was about to fawn on her. Tang read his mind and asked him
to divorce his wife, or even kill her. Xu was prepared to kill Sun
Zhiying but withdrew the glass of poisoned wine at the last moment.
Tang knew Xu was too timid to divorce or kill his wife and scoffed at him at a banquet. Ashamed and embarrassed, Xu returned home and realised that Sun Zhiying had been kind and tender to him. Out of deep regret he attempted suicide but was finally persuaded by his wife and friends.
