Since the death of their rich parents the Fang siblings had been raised by the eldest sister Fang Ziwen.

Soon after her 20th birthday, Fang Ziwen's younger sister Fang Fengwen fell in love with a prodigal Diao Chuntang, who had chased after Fang Ziwen years ago, eyeing at Fang's fortune. Fang Fengwen was so attracted to Diao that she would not listen to her eldest sister anymore. Fang Ziwen then tried to seek help from her ex-lover Liu Junmo. Unfortunately Liu had become an alcoholic since his break-up with Fang Ziwen and could not help much. Extremely worried and helpless, Fang Ziwen went to Diao and asked him to leave her sister alone. Diao held her tight in his arms and tried to force his attentions on her. At this moment Fang Fengwen came and mistook that her sister had an affair with Diao.

Fang Ziwen went to see Liu again for advice. Soon they decided to see Diao again with a considerable sum of money. However, Diao demanded half of Fang's fortune and the negotiation failed again. Liu then suggested Fang Ziwen tell her sister how she had been cheated by Diao years ago, in the hope that Fang Fengwen would understand what a man Diao really was and thus leave him. However, Fang Fengwen had been drinking with Diao in his house. When Fang Ziwen visited Diao's house, a drunken Fang Fengwen scolded and slapped her sister in the face. Although Fang Fengwen subsequently apologised for her rudeness she also pledged that she would not marry anyone but Diao.

Fang Ziwen reckoned that she had no choice but to have a final deal with Diao. She brought with her a cheque and a pistol. Again, Diao was not convinced and tore the cheque into pieces. He even went so far to demand an affair with Fang Ziwen. Fang Ziwen shot Diao dead and fled to Liu's house. The following day Fang Ziwen returned home to bid farewell to her brothers and sisters. A saddened Fang Fengwen said she overheard the conversation between Diao and her sister last night and had deep regret for not taking her sister's advice. Fang Ziwen comforted her and went to confess at the police station. However, the police found that the fatal shot was actually fired by Liu. Fang Ziwen was then acquitted and returned home.
