In the year of 2367 of the Buddhist calendar, the Laotian monarch was
invited to attend a ceremony held by his counterpart in Thailand.
The Bangkok mayor's wife had a relative Wenlian who had been living
in Laos for years and asked the Laotian king if he could bring her to
Bangkok as well. The Laotian king agreed and appointed Captain Ping
Qing to escort her. During the exhausting journey Wenlian and Captain
Ping fell in love with each other and were ready to get married.
Wenlian and Captain Ping finally arrived in Bangkok. The mayor's wife was excited to see Wenlian after years of separation. Envious to see how close Wenlian and the Laotian captain were the Thai general Basha, who was serving at the mayor's house, engaged in a fight with Ping. |

Days later there was a riot in Thailand. Out of humanitarianism the
Laotian king ordered Captain Ping to escort the Thais to take shelter
in the Lao territory. However, many Thais thought Laos was looting
their people and property and hid themselves in the mountains instead.
Those who failed to escape, most of whom were women and children
including the Bangkok mayor's wife and Wenlian, were planning a
strike-back.
Wenlian volunteered to be a messenger for General Basha and attempted to assassinate Captain Ping. When he saw Wenlian he explained what their real intentions were. Wenlian then asked him to escape but he refused given his duties. |

Soon the Thai people revolted against Laos under the leadership of General Basha. He fought a battle with Captain Ping and had the upper hand. Suddenly Wenlian appeared and pleaded for Captain Ping. General Basha then forced Wenlian to marry him before he could release the Laotian captain. Wenlian agreed but General Basha was prepared to kill Captain Ping. He held him in custody in the gunpowder storage and set it on fire. Wenlian came to Captain Ping's rescue but ultimately they died together in the roaring flames. |
