This was an adaptation of a novel Qin Huai Shi Jia ("Clans at the Qinhuai River") by Zhang Henshui.

Burglar Hu Dagou was a respected and righteous hero among many in the grassroots. He had wanted to quit stealing but in vain. One day, Hu learned that the mother of a prostitute A Qiao was seriously ill and thus needed a large sum of money for medicine. He volunteered to steal an expensive diamond ring from the famous singer Guo Xiaoxia. Guo soon found her diamond ring was lost and told her mother, who knew a lot of people in both the triads and the police. She thought it was Hu who stole the ring and sent her men to catch him. A Qiao came to plead for Hu and Hu admitted that he was doing this for A Qiao's mother. Guo and her mother appreciated Hu's chivalry and released him.

Attracted to Guo's beauty, triad leader Cao Jinhu had tried to persuade her to be his concubine but failed. He then sent his men to disturb Guo's performance at the Dragon and Pheonix Court. Guo was so annoyed that she had to suspend her performance and broke into tears at the backstage. Given the powers of Cao, Hu and his good friends Xiao Shuanzi and Zheng Jinde persuaded Guo to flee with her mother. On their way Guo, her mother and Zheng were kidnapped by Cao's men after a dreadful struggle. Seeing that Guo would not yield, Cao burnt some poisonous incense, making Guo unconscious and forced his attentions on her. When Guo woke up the next morning, she vowed revenge on Cao.

Soon Cao gave Guo to his right-hand man Lan Xiaosan and made Guo accompany Lan to drink. Guo wasted no time to make Lan drunk and stole his pistol. She tried to kill Cao but he managed to strike back with his men. At this time Hu and his friends came and both sides engaged in a fierce struggle. Subsequently Cao was pushed down the staircase and died. As Hu and his companions escorted Guo and her mother out of the house, they burnt Cao's residence into ashes and fled.
