Young man Wan Jialiang came from the mainland and worked in his uncle Dong Xinming's factory as a worker. His colleague Lu Xiuzhen was kind and helpful and they fell in love soon. One day Wan fell ill at home. Lu went to visit him after work and stayed until midnight. As she left Wan's house she came across another colleague Zhou Shaowei, who thought she was a call-girl and scoffed at her. Lu felt insulted and scolded him angrily. The following day Zhou spread rumours about Lu in the factory and she was consequently dismissed. Feeling guilty and sorry for Lu, Wan asked Lu to live with him so that he could take good care of her. Soon Lu was pregnant and they planned to get married.

Knowing that Wan, a university graduate, had been working as an ordinary worker, Wan's cousin Dong Yaqin complained to her father and asked him to promote Wan to be the manager. Gradually Wan was attracted to Dong Yaqin's charm and wealth and began to develop an affair with her. But Lu did not know anything until she heard of Wan's engagement with Dong Yaqin.

Overwhelmed with sadness and hopelessness, Lu wanted to abort but was stopped by her doctor. After some thought Lu decided to go to Wan and asked him to make a choice. Wan tried to avoid her and when he could avoid no more, he asked Lu to move to Macau and he would marry her when the baby was born. Lu was not convinced and demanded a secret talk between themselves. In an afternoon they went boating in the sea and soon a quarrel broke out. Wan suddenly pushed Lu into the water and she was drowned. Wan fled to Dong's house and asked her to travel abroad with him. As they were about to leave the police came to arrest Wan for murdering Lu.
