Textile factory owner Feng Gengtang was a lonely middle-aged man
who could hardly find any warmth at home any more. His wife Shi
Erfen had been playing mahjong all the time, and their children
were then grown up and had started their own lives. After
graduation from college, the eldest son Feng Zukang worked in a
company owned by his father's friend instead of managing the
family business. The younger daughter Feng Yaling had been
wandering around with a playboy David Fang, abandoning her
studies.
One day Feng Gengtang's secretary Mr Jiang employed a young, hard-working and prudent girl called Du Huifang as a clerk. Feng Gengtang was happy and satisfied with her performance. |

Du came from a poor family with a younger brother who was still
studying in primary school. She lost her father years ago and her
mother had become too ill to work. She then had to quit schooling
and look for a job to support her family. Out of sympathy, Feng
Gengtang had gradually developed some secret feelings for Du.
Soon Du's mother was seriously ill and had to be sent to the hospital for treatment. Feng Gengtang volunteered to offer a hand and then asked Du's mother if he could keep Du as his mistress. To compensate Feng Gengtang's generosity, Du agreed bitterly. However, this had been made known to Feng Zukang who then informed his mother immediately. Shi was outrageous and asked her daughter to follow Feng Gengtang wherever he went. Feng Yaling even took a picture of her father and Du. Shi had wished to give both Du and her husband a hard time but was finally pacified by her son. She then decided to ask Du to live in her house before the decoration works of the new house was finished. Feng Gengtang was so embarrassed but he could hardly utter a word. |

Shi had thought Du was a money-minded girl who wanted to take
advantage of Feng's wealth. Yet she was soon impressed by Du's
simplicity and sincerity, and thus changed her mind. When Feng
Zukang returned home he was surprised to see Du, an old classmate
of his. He then dated her at weekends and they soon fell in love
with each other. To eliminate the possibility of developing an
affair between her husband and Du, Shi was extremely supportive
for her son's affair with Du and asked her daughter to monitor
the whereabouts of her husband.
Soon Feng Zukang was transferred to work in Singapore. On the eve of Feng Zukang's departure, Shi scoffed at her husband's real intentions and asked Du to accompany Feng Zukang to Singapore to start a new life together.
