Singaporean-Chinese Song Wenlong came to Hong Kong for sight-seeing
and to look for the daughter of his father's friend Chen Ziping.
One day in Repulse Bay he rescued a puppy from being knocked down
in the middle of the road but got injured. Chen Yufeng, a beautiful
girl who kept the puppy, admitted him into her resort and treated
his wound.
As they talked Song was surprised to know that Chen had not been sent to school. Instead she was well versed in Chinese classics and was somewhat traditional and out-dated in thinking. Chen told him that she had been sent to an uncle's house soon after her mother's death. Her father had been travelling around to do business and had not been heard for many years. Later when her uncle could not afford to take care of her, she was adopted by the resort's owner and had since been separated from the rest of the world. Out of sympathy Song asked for help from Gao Defu, another friend of his father, without knowing that Gao was in fact the one who adopted Chen. Gao was outrageous to know that Chen had talked to a stranger and forbade her to see Song any more. Chen missed Song so much that she ignored Gao's warning and asked Song to see her in the courtyard at night. After painstaking efforts Song managed to bring Chen out of the resort and sent her to live in Gao's residence in the downtown. Gao did not return home and asked the servant to receive them instead. |

The following day Gao returned home and condemned Chen for having
an affair with Song. Chen protested and said she would marry no
one but Song. Soon Gao decided to play a trick on Chen and agreed
to prepare for her marriage. Both Chen Ziping and Song's father
were invited to the wedding.
On the wedding day Chen was shocked to find that Gao's name was written on the marriage certificate. She protested and refused to sign. It was then found that Gao had tried to train Chen in the traditional way so that she could become "an ideal wife" by Chinese standards for himself. Meanwhile, Chen Ziping found that Chen was his daughter, whose real name was Xiaofeng. With the consent of Song's father, Chen married Song instead and the two lived happily ever after.
