Since her parents' death Qiuniang had been living with her sister who had married a poor man in Macau. Knowing that her brother-in-law could hardly support the family, Qiuniang finally managed to find a job in a hotel with the help of a neighbour. |
Hotel manager Zhou Dachuan was an ordinary labourer but was promoted to
run the hotel after marrying the owner's daughter. However, the ferocity
of his wife had prompted him to think of divorce.
One day, Qiuniang took her nephew to play in a park nearby. As her nephew went to fetch a ball in the pool he was nearly drowned but rescued by Zhou. Qiuniang thanked him and helped him cleaning his wet clothing. By chance a film crew shooting nearby took a picture of them which was consequently sent to Zhou's wife. Outrageous upon seeing the picture, Qiuniang was fired and Zhou was condemned. Zhou could bear his wife no more and decided to move to Hong Kong after taking his bonus. |

Weeks later Zhou lost his job. His wife then went to Hong Kong to make
him sign an agreement to divorce and looted all his savings as alimony.
Zhou was so depressed that he fell ill again. Qiuniang fetched help from
a friend of Zhou's, who referred her to a film director and she became an
actress. Later she was sent to make a film in Japan.
Knowing that Qiuniang had become a popular actress, Zhou moved out of the house where they had been living since arriving in Hong Kong and became a construction worker. He even tried hard to avoid seeing Qiuniang again after she returned. |
Sad and worried, Qiuniang tried her best to look for Zhou but failed. One
day she spotted him in a crowd of part-time actors in the film studio and
pleaded for reunion. Zhou was so grateful that he promised never to part
again.
