During the Japanese invasion of the three northeastern provinces of China, He Hua fled with her uncle but was soon sold to a brothel. She refused to yield and attempted suicide, but was saved by painters Yu Rui and Guan Sansheng. Yu and Guan called the police to close the brothel.

Police chief Ding Laohu was an integrated officer who pledged to eliminate prostitution. He rushed to close the brothel on receiving Yu and Guan's report. He Hua was among the wanted list but Yu told the police she was his wife and therefore released. He Hua was grateful of Yu and promised to marry him.

In the middle of their wedding, Cheng Baolu and Shan Lihong, owners of the brothel, came to take back He Hua. Ding arrived timely and arrested them all. He and Yu then went on with their wedding and became a good couple.

Soon the Second Sino-Japanese War broke off. Cheng and Shan were released from jail and became traitors who worked for the Japanese. They arrested the Yu couple and their neighbours, accusing them as anti-Japanese elements. Hoping to save her husband, He went to a banquet for Japanese officers and tried to escape in the middle of it. During the chaos she killed Cheng by accident and was arrested red-handed.

Meanwhile, Yu and his friends were released and joined an anti-Japanese guerilla led by Ding. They launched a rebellion but were all arrested as they returned to their headquarters. On the day of their execution, the Japanese surrendered unconditionally and everyone celebrated the victory.

Yu returned home with a heavy heart. Moments later he reunited with He. The couple held each other tightly with joy and excitement.
