This was an adaptation of "Jin Yunu Beats Her Heartless Groom with a Cane", Yu Shi Ming Yan by Feng Menglong (1574-1646 AD).

The beggars' leader Jin Song had a daughter named Yunu. She was kind, tender and beautiful. In a snowy day she saved the life of a poor scholar Mo Ji, who was seriously ill. When Mo recovered, he married Yunu with love and gratitude.

Three years later, it was time for Mo to sit for the civil service examinations in the capital. However, Mo did not have enough money to pay for food and shelter along the way. His father-in-law volunteered to beg along the way and carry the luggage for him. Then Mo set off with his wife and in-law.

Mo came third in the examinations and was assigned a position in Jiangxi province. During a banquet with all those who succeeded in the examinations, Mo was looked down upon because his wife was a beggar's daughter. Extremely embarrassed and ashamed, Mo wanted to divorce but without an excuse.

Knowing that Mo had become an official, Jin's old friends came to greet him. Outrageous to see his poor old mates, Mo ordered the guards to drive them away. Jin was angry at Mo's heartlessness and decided to return home. Yunu was saddened and disappointed to see how much her husband had changed.

On his way to take up his new position in Jiangxi, Mo quarrelled with Yunu again. Yunu then jumped into the river in a stormy night. Mo regretted much but it was too late.

Mo's senior Ambassador Lin appreciated his talents and wanted to marry him his daughter. On the wedding night, the bride ordered Mo to kneel into the room. As soon as he entered the room, all the maids beat him hard with canes. Not until then did Mo know his bride was actually Yunu, who had been saved by Lin. Lin knew Yunu still loved Mo and helped the couple reunite.
