This was an adaptation of a novel by Xu Xu.
Learned scholar Shen Jiaguang who came from the mainland had been unemployed for months. His wife Lu Xiaoyin was seriously ill with tuberculosis and their savings had been draining away. They became so poor that they could no longer afford to send their son to school. One day, Shen went to a pawnshop where he met two neighbours, Zhang and Li. They referred Shen to become a temporary worker in a filming studio. However, Lu's health deteriorated and Shen was forced to stay at home. Desperate for money to improve the lives of his beloved wife and son, Shen was determined to rob single women with his son's toy pistol. Surprisingly, he had a few successful attempts with a considerable sum of money. He could no longer resist the temptation. One day, Shen stole a passenger's handbag on a bus but was soon discovered. The bus was driven to the police station where all passengers had to be interrogated. Zhang and Li admitted the crime and Shen was released. Feeling guilty and regretful, Shen went to have a drink in a bar, where he saw a bar girl wearing expensive jewellery. He then followed her into a dark alley and tried to rob her but was arrested red-handed.
