Young scholar Liu Yanchang lost his way in Hua Mountains on his way home from the civil examinations. He took a rest in the Temple of the Goddess of Hua Mountains and wrote a poem in praise of the Goddess' beauty. The Goddess was deeply moved by his talent and fell in love with him. Her maid Lingzhi asked her to hold back her emotions but the Goddess would not listen. Her brother Erlang also argued with her but failed to convince her.

When Liu set off the next morning he was seriously injured by the Heavenly Dog of Erlang. The Goddess saved his life and took good care of him. Liu was so grateful that he married the Goddess before he fully recovered. Soon Erlang was told of his sister's misbehaviour and led his troops to kill Liu. The Goddess was expecting her child and feared that Liu would be killed, she asked Lingzhi to bring Liu away. Erlang was furious to have missed Liu and chased after him. Soon he heard a baby crying from his sister's residence and immediately returned. Meanwhile, the Goddess also asked Lingzhi to give her child to Liu. Erlang was mad with anger as he could neither find Liu and the child. He put the Goddess in custody at the bottom of Hua Mountains. Liu was saddened to learn that his wife had suffered so much but he could do nothing to help. He brought his child home and gave him the name "Chenxiang" as the Goddess had left him a bracelet made of garuwood ("chenxiang").

Fourteen years had passed. Chenxiang had asked several times about his mother but Liu found it too sad to tell him the truth.

One day when Chenxiang was delivering some firewood with a neighbour Qiuer, they saw Qin Guanbao, son of the county head, bullying someone. They fought with him and killed him by accident. They were so afraid that they rushed home to tell their parents. Liu and Qiuer's parents did not want their children to be sentenced, but could nothing to remedy the situation. They finally agreed that Liu should confess to the government, and urged Chenxiang to save his mother at Hua Mountains after telling him the truth. When Chenxiang arrived at the temple of his mother he cried loudly in front of the altar, which caught the attention of Lingzhi. She told Chenxiang to save the Saint of Xiliang and learned magic powers from him to save his mother. The Saint was deeply touched by Chenxiang's love and respect for his mother and agreed without hesitation. Soon Chenxiang learned all the magic powers and brought with him a huge axe to remove the mountain rocks. Erlang led his troops to fight Chenxiang but they were all defeated. Chenxiang dug into the bottom of the mountain rocks where he finally saw his mother whom he had never met. The Goddess chose to give up her magic powers so that she could stay with her beloved husband and son for the rest of her life.
