This was an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. |
Once upon a time there lived two feuding clans in southern Tibet, the Cais
and the Liangs. They had been fighting with each other for generations and
only when the government interfered did they suspend the warfare.
One day when Liang Zuyi, son of the Liangs' clan elder, was hunting with a friend Meng Shijie, they stepped into the Cais' territory by mistake. Soon they found themselves besieged and attacked by a team of warriors led by Cai Yuanlong, the son of the Cais' clan elder. Liang was wounded but managed to escape under the cover of Meng. On his way home he came across Cai Tingting, the younger sister of Cai Yuanlong. He fell in love with her at first sight and followed her home despite his injuries. Soon Cai Yuanlong returned home with his companions, searching for Liang. With the help of Cai Tingting's wet nurse, Liang hid himself in Cai's bedroom and had his wounds treated. |

The following day the news ran that Liang had been injured and missing.
The wet nurse persuaded him home to avoid any further complications. Cai
Tingting accompanied Liang to get some medicine from Jilong Temple and
the two were too sad to depart. Monk Lianzhi was sympathetic of them and
willing to be their matchmaker.
On his way home, Liang was received at the border by Meng and his men. Soon they came across Cai Yuanlong again and engaged in another fight. Cai Yuanlong killed Meng and to avenge for his friend, Liang killed Cai Yuanlong instead. As a result, Liang was sentenced to exile. Monk Lianzhi of Jilong Temple pleaded for him and promised to arrange a meeting with Cai Tingting for him. |

According to Tibetan traditions, since Cai Yuanlong was not married
his ashes had to be brought to the mountain by his siblings, who should
stay overnight in the mountain and scattered the ashes in the morning.
Liang found Cai Tingting in her tent and told her the whole story,
pleading for forgiveness. Then they spent the night together in the tent.
Since Liang's exile Cai Tingting locked herself up in the bedroom, weeping night and day. Her parents were extremely worried and arranged a wedding for her. Cai Tingting tried hard to resist and seek help from Monk Lianzhi. |
Monk Lianzhi gave Cai Tingting some medicine which made her fall in coma
for two days. Meanwhile, he sent a messenger to ask Liang to sneak back.
Unfortunately, the messenger had an accident on his way and could not
reach Liang on time.
Grief-stricken to learn that Cai Tingting had died, Liang sneaked back into the temple and committed suicide beside her bed. As Cai Tingting woke up, she was heart-broken to see Liang lying dead beside her. She then killed herself. As their parents rushed to the temple, they pledged peace forever in appreciation of their children's everlasting love.
