During the Japanese invasion, Ma Renshan was well known and highly respected for his kind heart and medical expertise. He served the poor and the injured with his second daughter Ma Xiuyun. Xiuyun had tried to persuade her father to move away from the frontier but he refused. Soon the Japanese troops occupied Ma's hospital and killed all the soldiers. They even raped and killed Ma's youngest daughter. Grief-stricken and outrageous, Xiuyun and her younger brother Shaohua joined the anti-Japanese guerrilla. The eldest son Zhihua had been studying in Japan for years. He joined the Japanese army to invade China after graduation. Another daughter Xiuzhen fell in love with a Chinese traitor He Xiaodong. Soon it was Ma's birthday. The family was shocked to see a Japanese general Ito sending his greetings in person. Xiuyun secretly asked her younger brother Shaohua to escape, but was stopped by Zhihua. Xiuyun was so anxious that she pointed a pistol at Ito, threatening him to let Shaohua go.
