This was an adaptation of "A Xiu", The Liao Chai Collection of Ghost
Stories by Pu Songling (1630 or 1640-1715 AD).
Liu Zigu went to visit his uncle in Gaizhou. On his way he met a beautiful girl A Xiu by the riverside. He was so absorbed by her beauty that he stepped into the water. |
When in Gaizhou, Liu met A Xiu again in a paper fan shop owned by A Xiu's
father. Liu went to the shop every day to buy a fan and see A Xiu. Her
father mistook Liu as a prodigal and hit him hard.
One day, Liu followed his uncle to a matchmaker, who had arranged A Xiu as his bride. Both Liu and A Xiu were delighted and thus engaged. The following day, Liu and A Xiu visited a temple in the countryside. There they met a goddess who looked very much similar to A Xiu. Liu praised the goddess's beauty but A Xiu was sceptical. The goddess was irritated and made them quarrel. |
Meanwhile, a rich young man proposed to A Xiu's father with many expensive
gifts. A Xiu's father agreed almost immediately because he was not happy with
Liu at all. On the wedding day, Liu came to fight with the rich man for A
Xiu. Embarrassed and irritated, A Xiu attempted suicide but was stopped. At
this time, the goddess appeared in A Xiu's costumes and pointed an accusing
finger at her. Everyone was surprised to see that there were two A Xiu.
The goddess had disguised as A Xiu to spoil her marriage with Liu. The rich young man was a fairy trapped in A Xiu's fan but was later released by accident. Since then he had been chasing after A Xiu despite her engagement with Liu. Finally the goddess thought she had taught A Xiu a lesson and helped with her wedding. At the same time, she also held the fairy in custody again. |
