This was an adaptation of "Nie Xiaoqian" in The Liao Chai Collection of Ghost Stories by Pu Songling (1630 or 1640-1715 AD).

When in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, Ning Caichen lived in a deserted temple, where he met a Taoist monk Yan Chixia and a beautiful lady Nie Xiaoqian. Ning and Nie exchanged poems and they fell in love with each other. At night, Nie went to lure Ning in his room, but he managed to refuse her out of integrity.

Ning did not know Nie had died decades ago until he saw a portrait of her in an antique shop the next day. At night when Nie came to his room again, he refused her coldly.

On the third night, Nie admitted that she was a ghost and had been forced to kill young men for Lao Lao, a wicked witch who fed on young men's blood. Nie said she would not kill Ning for his kindness and integrity and asked if he could bring her hair and qin (a small harp) back to her hometown. Ning agreed. On their way, Lao Lao appeared and was about to kill Ning. Yan caught up with them and finally managed to kill Lao Lao. Ning and Nie then returned to Nie's hometown where they lived happily ever after.
