This was an adaptation of the masterpiece of Chinese playwright Cao Yu.
Social butterfly Chen Bailu's friends all came from the upper class but led a corrupt life - George Zhang, who had studied abroad, always spoke English as if he were an expatriate. He had been chasing after Chen for years, although Chen never gave him a good time. Banker Pan Yueting had mortgaged a building, which was still under construction, to pump money into his speculative activities. The widow Mrs Gu had met a new boyfriend Hu Si, who was as young as her son. When Chen's ex-lover Fang Dasheng came from the countryside to visit her, he was astonished to see how much Chen had changed. Escaped from a brothel controlled by some powerful gangsters, a poor girl Xiao Dongxi pleaded Chen to let her in. Moments later, the gangsters came to Chen and threatened her to hand over Xiao. Pan, who supported Chen's living, told a lie and drove the gangsters away. Fearing that the gangsters might come again, Chen and Fang escorted Xiao to hide in the countryside. |
Saddened to see Chen leading a corrupt life as a social butterfly, Fang
tried to persuade her to quit and promised to find her a job. Chen had
agreed, but as she returned to the city she changed her mind, with worries
that she could never enjoy a luxurious life again. Meanwhile, news broke
that Pan had been driven to bankruptcy after falling prey to the gangsters.
Frustrated and hopeless, Chen gave up her train ticket to Xiao and committed
suicide.
